FDA approves new peanut allergy food labels

FDA approves new peanut allergy food labels

Food allergy is a key public health problem because it affects children and adults, can be severe and even life-threatening.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is planning new labels for peanut-containing foods suitable for infants . This decision came as a result of the new guidelines from the NIAID and  a recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health. New FDA approved food labels will include advice about introducing peanuts to their children’s diets, in addition to warning about the potential contamination of food with peanuts .The new claim on food labels will also recommend that parents check with their infant’s healthcare provider before introducing foods containing ground peanuts. The FDA will continue to monitor the research related to peanut allergy as the claim is based on one study only and FDA will also evaluate whether the claim should be updated.
