GlobalGAP Plans To Develop Auditable Standard For Produce Safety Rule Compliance
The GlobalGAP community is planning to develop an auditable solution for compliance with the Produce Safety Rule of Food Safety Modernization Act regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This rule covers standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce and is applicable for producers of fruits and vegetables. These regulations contain minimum requirements for the safe production and harvesting of raw agricultural commodities for human consumption. Compliance with this rule is required of fruit and vegetable producers in the USA and around the world with USA as a destination market.
GLOBALG.A.P. is a farm assurance program, which helps in translating consumer requirements into Good Agricultural Practice. GAP is a short form for Good Agricultural Practices. The aim of this certification was to bring conformity to different retailers’ supplier standards, which had been creating problems for farmers.
It was published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and is governed according to the ISO Guide 65 for certifications schemes.
